When you’re launching a candle brand, it’s easy to fall in love with packaging. Custom rigid boxes. Foil stamping. Embossing. Printed glass. Specialty papers. Custom inserts. Beautiful closures. There are seemingly endless ways to make a candle feel more luxurious—and those details can absolutely elevate a brand.
But they also come at a cost.
For a new brand, the better question isn’t simply, “Should I invest in premium packaging?”
It’s “Where will my packaging investment have the greatest impact?”
The answer depends on your brand, your price point, your margins, your order quantities—and importantly, whether you’re selling wholesale, direct-to-consumer, or both.
Premium Doesn’t Have to Mean Expensive
One of the biggest misconceptions about packaging is that product needs elaborate custom packaging to look high-end.
It doesn’t.
A thoughtfully selected vessel, beautiful label, sophisticated typography, cohesive color palette, and well-designed carton can create a very premium presentation without requiring every component to be completely custom.
For a newer brand, simplicity can be an advantage. It allows you to create a polished, intentional product while preserving capital for the things that matter most at launch—product quality, inventory, marketing, and customer acquisition.
The key is making the packaging feel intentional rather than inexpensive.
If You’re Selling Wholesale, Packaging Has a Different Job
Wholesale changes the equation because your product must appeal to two customers: the retailer who decides to carry it and the consumer who ultimately buys it.
Presentation matters. Your candle needs to look retail-ready, communicate its value quickly, and feel appropriate for the stores you’re targeting. Packaging can also help protect the vessel through shipping, receiving, stocking, and customer handling.
But there is another consideration: margin.
Every additional packaging component becomes part of your cost of goods. If you’re selling wholesale, you need enough room between your manufacturing cost, wholesale price, and suggested retail price for the economics to work for everyone.
A beautiful $8 rigid box may look incredible, but if it pushes the finished product beyond the price point your target retailer or customer will support, it may not be the right investment—at least not yet.
Sometimes a beautifully designed folding carton or even a well-executed label and vessel combination is the smarter launch strategy.
For DTC Brands, the Unboxing Experience Matters More
Direct-to-consumer brands have a different opportunity. Your customer has already made the purchase before physically experiencing the product. When the package arrives, that first interaction becomes part of your brand story.
Opening the shipping carton. Seeing the product packaging. Feeling the paper. Removing the candle. Discovering a thoughtful insert. Those details can make an online purchase feel special.
For a premium DTC brand, investing more in packaging may make sense because the packaging itself becomes part of the customer experience. It can reinforce your positioning, encourage social sharing, make the product feel gift-worthy, and help justify a premium price.
But even here, more isn’t automatically better.
Every box, insert, ribbon, sleeve, and specialty component adds cost—not only in materials, but potentially in assembly, storage, shipping weight, and fulfillment. Beautiful packaging still needs to make financial sense.
Where Should a New Candle Brand Spend First?
If your budget isn’t unlimited—and whose is at launch? We generally believe the smartest approach is to prioritize the elements your customer experiences most.
Start with the candle itself. A beautiful vessel. A fragrance that represents your brand. Strong scent performance. Proper wick selection and burn performance. A label or decoration that feels considered and professional.
Then think about the primary packaging.
Would a carton significantly elevate the product? Does the candle need protection? Is gifting important to your customer? Will the packaging help communicate a higher price point?
Those questions are more useful than simply asking, “What’s the fanciest box we can make?”
Because a beautifully executed simple package can often make a stronger impression than an elaborate package that forces you to compromise somewhere else.
Don’t Forget About MOQs
Custom packaging often comes with minimum order quantities.
That gorgeous custom vessel color, specialty printed glass, rigid box, molded insert, or foil-stamped carton may require you to purchase considerably more inventory than a simpler option.
For an established brand with predictable sales, that may be completely reasonable. For a brand launching its first collection, it can mean tying up a significant amount of capital before knowing which fragrances, sizes, or designs customers will respond to most.
This is one reason it can make sense to design for where you are now while planning for where you want to go. Launch beautifully. Learn what sells. Then invest strategically.
Your Packaging Can Grow with Your Brand
Your first package doesn’t have to be your forever package.
As order volumes increase, new options often become more practical. Higher quantities may open the door to custom glass colors, direct printing, specialty finishes, custom molds, premium rigid boxes, unique inserts, and more elaborate gift packaging.
You may also discover that certain products deserve different levels of packaging. Your core collection might remain beautifully simple, while a holiday collection, collaboration, corporate gift program, or premium line receives a more elevated presentation.
Packaging can evolve along with your brand.
And in many cases, that’s a healthier strategy than trying to build the most elaborate version of your product on day one.
So, Is Premium Packaging Worth It?
Sometimes, absolutely.
The right packaging can elevate perceived value, strengthen brand recognition, create a memorable customer experience, and help a product stand apart in a crowded market.
But premium packaging should serve the brand—not become an expense simply because it looks impressive.
The best packaging decisions consider the entire business: your customer, sales channel, retail price, margins, minimums, shipping requirements, brand positioning, and plans for growth.
Premium doesn’t necessarily mean elaborate. It means intentional.
Finding the Right Packaging Strategy
At Unique Candles Midwest, we work with brands to think about packaging alongside the product itself, from vessels and labels to cartons, printing, gift sets, and more customized packaging options.
Sometimes the right answer is a beautifully simple solution that allows a new brand to launch without overcommitting. Other times, a premium vessel and elevated custom package are central to the concept and worth the additional investment.
There isn’t one right answer for every brand.
The goal is to create something that looks and feels like your brand, works for the way you plan to sell it, and gives you room to grow.
If you’re developing a candle or home fragrance collection and trying to determine where to invest—and where you may be able to simplify—we’d love to hear what you’re creating.
